Recommended Foods Part Four: Specific Bird Recommendations by Scott Stork

Okay, one last quick article to tie together any loose ends from the first three 'Recommended Foods' articles. When it comes right down to it most people seem to just want to know exactly what we recommend for their type of bird. We are currently doing research and working on specific diet recommendation for all of the different species of parrots. Until that is done here is a quick summary of what we recommend.

Finches (and Canaries):

  1. 1/2 to 3/4 of their diet should be seed and natural food mixes. We recommend Parrot Island Specialty Mix Finch/Canary/Keet, Dr. Harvey's, Goldenfeast and Toppers (in that order).
  2. 1/4 to 1/2 of their diet should be a high quality formulated diet. We recommend Scenic's Tropical Bits and Harrison's Mash.
  3. Approximately 1/4 of their diet should be people foods. Concentrating on high vitamin A vegetables. (See Rec. Foods III) Also tofu, sprouted seeds and well cooked egg whites.
  4. Treats and supplements include Millet, Live foods (Insect Larvae), Avian X-Stress, Nekton Vitamins and Dr. Harvey's Natural Supplements.
Cockatiels, Parakeets, Lovebirds, Grass Parrots, Parrotlets & Ringneck Parakeets:
  1. 1/3 to ½ of their diet should be a high quality seed or natural seed mix. We recommend Parrot Island Specialty Mix for small parrots, Dr. Harvey's, Goldenfeast and Toppers (in that order).
  2. 1/3 to ½ of their diet should be a mix of high quality formulated diets. We recommend Harrison's Fine Grind, Roudybush Crumbles and Scenic's Hot & Healthy or Tropical Bits.
  3. ¼ to 1/3 of their diet should be people foods. Concentrating on high vitamin A vegetables. Also sprouted seeds, cereals, breads, etc…
  4. Treats and supplements include Millet, Mega-Millet, Avi-Cakes, Avian X-Stress, Harrison's Mash, Nekton Vitamins and Dr. Harvey's Natural Supplements
Most Other Parrots:
  1. 1/2 to 2/3 of their diet should be a mixture of high quality formulated diets. We recommend Harrison's Coarse, Roudybush Pellets, and Scenic Jungle or Paradise Mix.
  2. 1/3 to 1/2 of their diet should be a variety of people foods. Concentrating on high vitamin A vegetables and fruits but including a wide variety of people food.
  3. Up to 1/4 of their diet should be seed and natural food mixes such as Parrot Islands Standard Parrot Mix and or Custom Parrot, Dr. Harvey's, Goldenfeast, Nutra-Fruit or properly prepared sprouted seeds.
  4. Treats and supplements can include nuts, Nutra-Berries, Dr. Harvey's Bakery Treats and Natural Supplements.
Many species of birds have higher needs for certain types of foods such as fruits or nuts but the simple lists above should get you started on a good diet for your birds. If you have specific questions check the first three articles in this series. And as always contact Parrot Island with any questions.
