Product Description

Please feel free to contact us as to the proper usage of the Gram Scale.

Parrot Island's Precision Gram Scale is the most reliable, accurate (to within 1 gram) scale that we have been able to find.

This scale utilizes a specific balance mechanism that we have been using since 1981 in the Kenwood Veterinary Clinic (where Terry worked as a Veterinary Technician and Clinic Manager) and since 1987 with our retail store! There are many gram scales available today but this is the best value and quality in one that we have been able to find! Our opinion is why pay $40.00 less (about the cheapest a gram scale that has a similar initial accuracy can be found is about $60-$70) for a scale that, in most cases will begin to lose it's accuracy in 2 to 3 years of usage - when you can buy one scale that will last much longer? We use several of these scales in our store and home on a daily basis - one was purchased in 1981, one in 1994 and one in 2000 - all are still accurate!

Monitoring weight is one of the easiest, best ways to keep tabs on your bird's health. Weight change can be a very good indicator of a potential health problem with a bird.

Weight gain (in an adult bird) may alert an owner and Avian Veterinarian about the possibility of a bird developing fatty liver syndrome (hepatic lipidosis), fatty tumors (lipomas and xanthomas) or generalized lipornatosis (an abnormal layer of fat deposited under the skin). Weight gain may also be caused by metabolic problems, heart or liver problems resulting in a fluid build-up, problems associated with egg binding, some tumors, lack of exercise or an inappropriate diet. It has also become apparent to us that weight gain can be an indicator of hormonal changes and the reproductive cycle - especially in females.

Weight loss can be a sign of many infectious diseases (including proventricular dilatation disease [PDD], aspergillosis and others), infestation with parasites (including Giardia and roundworms), inappropriate diet, competition for food with other birds, metabolic problems, some tumors and beak problems.

Unexplained weight change should always be brought to the attention of your Avian Veterinarian. We recommend that you get into the habit of weighing your companion birds on a 2 to 4 week basis and documenting it - including the date. Weight loss that is not discernable by handling your bird will be documented by the scale long before a bird may become clinically ill and weight loss is obvious. For the most accurate weight comparison we recommend weighing your bird about the same time each morning.

Deciding if a bird is too thin or too fat is a subjective matter, and cannot be simply based on a number on a scale. As with people - each individual bird (even of the same species) can have a different healthy weight range dependent on the specifics genetics and metabolism of your bird. Your Avian Veterinarian will be able to help you determine what is a proper weight range for your specific bird. You can see one of our Double Yellow Headed Amazons - Lt. Columbo being weighed in the picture at right, 501 grams has been determined to be about the perfect weight for him!

There is also a great video in the Movie section of our website where Columbo shows how he weighs himself! (Click on the underlined link):
